Had a very good night. Up reasonably early to be ready after breakfast to pay our account and set off for Assiniboine to visit Gladys and Harry Phelan. Gladys’ father knew Tom’s mother many years ago. He was a member of the Chichester family of Coombes who lived at Abelands and had a corn and animal feed business in Chichester.
We had breakfast and left Jasper at 10.00am. Quite a long drive in front of us of approx 160 miles. We took the road to Edmonton and drove on the Trans Canadian Highway and then onto the North Road. This road, going into sparsely built areas of homesteads and farms was very quiet but long- not like country roads in England, it had two traffic lanes. This must have been some 100 miles long.
We arrived at Assiniboine approx 3.45pm. We just asked at the local shop the whereabouts of Gladys and Harry and then soon found them. We had a lovely welcome and and a drink with Gladys, Harry and their son Billy. Wonderful to hear the history going back to Harry’s father around 1910 and of Gladys’ father leaving Chichester. Had a lovely meal and a nice quiet evening. We are going to the rodeo, early start tomorrow.
Got up at 8.00am. Washed hair. Had breakfast, filled with gas and started the drive up to Assiniboine. Just stopped for an hour break. Lots cross country where we didn’t see a car for ages. Found Gladys and Harry’s quite easily. Their son Billy was there. Had a few drinks and then a meal- stew, ham, cheese and potatoes. Watched some telly in the evening and went to bed about 9.30pm. Slept well.
