Grace’s Journal

Rachel woke me up at 7.30am this morning. I had quite a reasonable night except during a thunder and lightening storm. I washed and dressed and went into breakfast. I had scrambled egg, bacon and toast which went down well. I had packed and just washed so was ready to leave.

We both had very emotional farewells to Harry and Gladys for they had given us a lovey time and nothing was too much trouble for them and they were very generous in every way. It was raining very hard when we left, waving to them both – they would like another visit from us. The thunderous rain made visibility very poor but Rachel coped with it. We were pleased to leave it behind.

It was a long journey to Calgary. We stopped for lunch at a park to which we were referred to by a a direction notice and it was a pleasant place with picnic tables. We did not stay long as Rachel was anxious to get to Calgary and register at the new hotel.

We arrived about 3.00pm and booked in and went to our appartment 1603. It was fiited with oven, refridgerator, microwave and had separate bedrooms. We were not prepared to do our own cooking for one night so we went down to dinner in the hotel and very nice it was too. We decided not to go out as the wind was fierce and TV said a typhoon was likely to hit Red Deer which is not many miles from Calgary.

We rang Tom. He had been very worried about us changing direction from the original itinary and we hadn’t been able to ring yesterday as we were very taken up with Harry and Gladys and learning about their lives in Canada, meeting their son Billy and daughter Jacky. Also going to the rodeo and watching baseball which Harry is very interested in and only gave up about 3 years ago. I did not like to think Tom had been worried but we sorted it out between us.

Woke up at 6.30am. Got up at 7.00am. Had to wake Mum. Had scrambled egg and bacon for breakfast. Raining quite hard. Got packed and left at 8.30.

Drove for 6 hours on fairly good roads. Good signs all the way. Journey was really good. Got to hotel and rang dad. Watched TV then went down for supper, a 14oz T-bone steak. Back to room and watched more telly.
